My recent visit to Makena Resort was very disappointing. My wife and I stayed at Makena in 2007 for 8 nights. We throughly enjoyed the resort, the service and atmosphere. We stayed for two nights in 2010. In Septemeber, 2009, the operation changed from Prince to Benchmark. The results are disappointing. The property has not been maintained to the level of the previous operators. Examples of shortfalls include the breakfast buffet and the resort pool. The previous breakfast buffet included a large continental and full buffet selection, Japanese style buffet, made to order omelettes, made to order waffles and fresh egg dishes. The current buffet has reduced the personal service items: no omelettes, broken toasters and waffle irons, cold egg dishes cooked at least an hour before my service at 7:30. As a benefit for the hotel workers, they are allowed to bring their families to the pool. I don't mind this in and of itself, however most of the lounge chairs and access to the pool are occupied by children of employees. The atmosphere is not resort but that of a public pool. Towels are accounted for by "towel cards," two to a person. Towel cards must be converted into towels while at the pool, then converted back to towel cards when done using the towel for the day. However, the towel booth is often left locked and unattended, requiring towel access and return at the front desk. Beware of the extra, required $* per day resort charge not included in your orignial payment. We will not return to Makena.

This is a perfect property for a family vacation. It is situated on a wonderful, beautiful beach with gentle waves, great for kids to play in. Every evening we were able to go down to the beach and see numerous turtles in the water right in front of the hotel. Can't wait to go back!

We spent 9 nights at the Makena Beach. It is the last hotel on the road south of Kihei. It has beautiful grounds, the beach is excellent (we snorkeled almost everyday), and the room was great. We had a second floor room which may have lessened our view, but it included a huge bathroom with separate shower and tub. The balcony was large enough to have room service delivered. The only complaint we had was the lack of restaurants. One restaurant was open for breakfast, as second for dinner. Since almost every dish had seafood included I was unable to try dinner at the hotel. From 10 am to 6 pm the only food available was poolside. Sounds good, but the kitchen is still in the hotel. We ordered a sandwich and a salad and it was over 1 hour before we got our food. I am all for Hawaii time, but this was too much for a $* salad. On the other hand we enjoyed room service on our balcony and watched the sunset and the sailboat return! The staff was very informative and friendly. We went to several places on their recommendations. We also bought the snorkel trip right off the beach at the Makena. We went on the 6:30 am ride, loved it, had Molokini all to ourselves and had the whole day left when we returned. If want a beautiful place that is quiet and laid back this is it. Wailea is just a few minutes away by car and Kihei just a 10 or 12 minutes. There are plenty of food choices there and you can get a little atmosphere. I would give this hotel 4.5 out of 5 stars!!!!!

The reviews we read before booking this hotel were accurate but until you get there its hard to understand what they mean. Overall the hotel was what we were looking for - affordable, private and a nice beach and pool. Admittedly the rooms are a bit rundown but they were clean. If you are looking for a 5 star hotel stay at the Fairmont or Four Seasons, I would put this in the 3 1/2 to 4 star category. You can tell that they haven't changed out the room furnishings and some areas need painting but when we were there they were really spending time on the pool area and loungesto freshen them up so were seeing improvements. We were disappointed with the workout 'facility'. It was a guest room with weignt machines and elipticals, treadmills crammed in so don't expect much. We ended up going off property for our workouts. On the other hand we took the Sunrise snorkel cruise on the boat that comes right on shore of the private beach and it exceeded our expectations with the staff, boat and equipment and then had a really wonderful massage in the newly built outside Lanai so it depends what you want for your vacation. The added fee of $15 (now $25) a day for water and other room amenities seemed steep but it seems like all of the hotels are doing that now but just be aware

I agree with other reviewers that the property is nice, but dated. The hotel has so much potential but the rooms need to be redone to match the rest of the facility. We were pleased that there weren't a lot of additional charges for things. The $15 daily resort fee covered the parking. The public areas are well kept up and beautiful. The beach has great snorkling. We really enjoyed the Wailea area of the island since it had less people.
